Janis Goad

Janis Goad is from the Ottawa area; she is an artist who loves working with different materials and has a passion for teaching. She enjoys sharing her skills with others. With a broad perspective on life, Janis brings a worldly outlook to her art and teaching, making her instruction both enriching and accessible. She has been making pine needle baskets since 2012.

In this workshop, participants will learn to make a small sewn spiral basket from pine needles. This course is for beginners. The maximum class size is 20 students. Techniques include:

- harvesting, preparing, and storing pine needles

- starting the basket and spacing stitches for even spokes

- increasing the coil

- controlling the shape of the basket

- adding new sinew

- finishing

- making the lid (time allowing)

- decorating with beads, feathers, fascicles, stitch designs, and found materials."

Workshop Details:

In this one day class Students would make a small basket with a lid, about 7 cm in diameter and 7 cm deep.

Learn to make a small sewn spiral basket from pine needles. Using pine needles, artificial sinew, and a needle, students will learn to make a small basket with a fitted lid. This course is for beginners. The maximum class size is 20 students.

Techniques include:

  • harvesting, preparing, and storing pine needles

  • starting the basket and spacing stitches for even spokes

  • increasing the coil

  • controlling the shape of the basket

  • adding new sinew

  • finishing

  • making the lid

  • adding the flange to the lid

  • decorating with beads, feathers, frascicles, stitch designs, and found materials."

Workshop Dates: Saturday May 4th, 2024

10am-5pm

Class Fee: $115 + tax


Workshop participants should bring scissors, a tea towel, a thick elastic (similar to the ones used on broccoli), a rubber thimble if preferred, and a Ziploc bag to carry home extra pine needles if they wish to continue working at home.

*These workshops are suitable for beginners. Intermediate and Serial Weavers are welcome in all of our workshops. Space is limited and workshops sell out quickly. You will be added to our waiting list if the class of your choice is sold out.

We ask that you leave your pets as home.


Once your form has been submitted you will receive an invoice via email. Attached to the invoice will be an information sheet about your workshop. Please allow 48 hours for us to process your form and send out your invoice. If you have not received your invoice within 48 hours you can contact us to ensure we received your form submission. Before submitting a form, please review our Cancellation Policy. If the class is fully booked you will automatically be added to the cancellation list.

Your payment secures your spot in the class. Invoices that become 5 days over due will be cancelled so the spaces can be filled prior to the class date.
