If you are new to planting willow, you may be wondering what the difference is between cuttings and rods/whips. Cuttings are approximately 10-12 inches in length and are typically planted by those wishing to plant a cutting garden whereby the willow would be coppiced (harvested) annually for craft or weaving purposes.

Whips or rods, are terms used interchangeably and can be used for pollarding rather than coppicing. If you are considering a cutting garden your planting site must provide at least 1/2 day sun, must have access to a water source for weekly deep watering when planted, and be away from septic systems and building foundations. Each stool produces between 10-30 rods of varying height depending on the variety. Please note, colours and growing habits may differ depending on soil and growing conditions of your site.

I’ve been quiet here lately—spring has kept me busy! The willow stools are leafing out now, a sure sign the season’s well underway. Our summer classes are up—come weave with us! Link to workshops in bio. #springwillow #willow
